These sculptures are mixed media creations, but the main and most important medium is Polymer Clay. I refer to this series as "Fetish Dolls for the 21st Century". I think of them as healing and protecting "dolls" that inspire comfort and refuge. Each creation symbolizes the Universal Great Mother, a female figure that nourishes and heals a tired spirit, rekindles hope and creativity.

Most of the sculptures are made to hang on a wall. Others are free standing. The torsos of the wall "dolls" are made from papier mache boxes, with doors that open and close to reveal hidden secrets, or protected objects.

A figure may hold life and/or the force of life within her torso. The colors and designs often represent elements of the earth. The animals, symbolic of all animal life, are protected; and the egg, which represents spirituality/creation/creativity/birth nourishes all.

The images are inspired by my early Catholic background, ancient pagan idols, African and Native American art, and Indian art. They can be thought of as altars, or images of female spirituality. The boxes/torsos with their small, intimate openings remind me of the church tabernacles that I found so compelling as a child.

Because of life events and my own inclinations I have become increasingly superstitious and have developed a strong belief in luck. I constantly collect good luck charms and totems in an almost primitive desire to ward off "bad" luck that's possibly lurking around dark corners. The sculptures include references to "lucky" numbers, totemic animals and ancient symbolic designs.

This work is also about process. It takes a long time to make a sculpture, which allows me the time to meditate on the idea and message behind each doll.
